The resignation, if confirmed, would end a tumultuous 17 months in office for Muhyiddin but also bring more uncertainty to Malaysia as the country grapples with a COVID-19 surge and economic downturn
The Dutch government, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte has resigned over the childcare subsidies scandal.
A report last month revealed that around 10,000 families in the Netherlands had been forced to repay tens of thousands of euros worth of subsidies, after being falsely accused of fraud.
"Today is December 31. The deadline for resignations ends at 12 midnight," he wrote on Twitter.
He tweeted, "Under Imran Khan's leadership, Pakistan emerged from the challenge [better than many]. We accorded importance to both health and the economy."
