Sindh to release eight terminally ill prisoners from jails

  • The development was made under an order of the Supreme Court in light of a provincial cabinet decision made in a session late last year.
  • They will be released from jails in Karachi, Hyderabad and Shukkur for a duration of four months and were subject to meeting all formalities and conditions as laid down in the order.

  • According to chief engineer of Sukkur Barrage, water supply will remain closed to Dadu Canal, NWF Canal, Kirthar Canal, Khairpur East Canal, Khairpur West Canal, Rohri Canal, Nara Canal and its related channels from January 6 to Jan 20.
  • The decrease in the river water causes water shortage in Sukkur, the major city in upper Sindh on the bank of Indus river.

  • This is the highest death toll since July, while death toll from the virus in the province has reached 3,060.
    • The chief minister said that 12,442 samples were tested which diagnosed 1,726 cases that constituted 13.9 per cent current detection rate.
