"Unfortunately Zlatan is not far enough along in his rehabilitation that he can join us in the upcoming gathering. Sad for us, and sad also for Zlatan of course," Sweden coach says
Milan fans are preparing for their first home Champions League match in over seven years with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid visiting the San Siro on Tuesday night
Ibrahimovic came out of international retirement in March after an absence of almost five years from the national team, and was due to be named as part of the Sweden squad on Tuesday.
"Today I have spoken to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has unfortunately communicated that his injury will prevent him from taking part in the Euros this summer," Andersson said in a statement.
Ibrahimovic came out of international retirement to compete for Sweden for the first time in five years last week, making an assist in each of his two starts for his country in World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Kosovo.
"He's fine, we are happy both for the national team and for him being back here with us," Pioli told a news conference on Friday.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's AC Milan need to improve their home form to keep in the running for a first 'Scudetto' since 2011, having not won any of their last five games in all competitions at the San Siro.
The Swede returned to his former club in January 2020 aged 38 and sparked a turnaround in form for the seven-time European champions, who have not won Serie A since 2011.
"Everyone knows him, his mentality - he's a winner," Bennacer told Reuters. "Maybe we didn't have this experience that he brought with him. It's good for us young players because we improved in this. Now we want to win like he wants to win.
Ibrahimovic returned to action from the bench on Thursday as the Rossoneri lost 1-0 to Manchester United on their way to a 2-1 aggregate defeat in the Europa League Last-16.
"Zlatan took advantage of the minutes he played on Thursday and tomorrow he will start," Pioli told a news conference.
Coach Stefano Pioli knows that he doesn't need Ibrahimovic to get past United after a superb display in Manchester last week, and his side could well start the game with their talisman on the bench.
The 39-year-old Swede, who is Milan's top scorer with 14 goals in 14 league games this season, was forced off during Sunday's 2-1 win over AS Roma with a muscular problem.
He is expected to miss at least 10 days, during which time he will be a guest at the Sanremo music festival throughout this week.
Champions League rivals Atalanta and Napoli go head-to-head on Sunday before the Bergamo side host Real Madrid in this year's elite European tournament.
"After this defeat, there was a lot of soul searching," said Bennacer, who was born in Arles, in the south of France, to an Algerian mother and a Moroccan father.
"As long as I'm fine, I'll go on," Ibrahimovic said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport. "My contract expires in June and we'll talk about it.
"I didn't want to get trapped in dead-end situations or even trap my club. That's why I signed up for six months on arrival and then renewed. I am for the freedom of choice."
