The government of Punjab has taken timely steps to unearth the sugar stacked at various godowns by hoarders. A number of them have been arrested. One can see how different mafias in the country operate and to what extent they have the support in the government.
While some activity has been seen in Punjab and Sindh, nothing visible seems to have been done in the NWFP. In fact, most of the sugar, atta, ghee is smuggled to Afghanistan, from the border areas, which needs to be checked. We are feeding Afghans, who in turn come back as suicide bombers to Pakistan. Smuggling to Afghanistan must be stopped.
Last year, farmers faced a shortage of urea. The wheat-growing season is approaching and the government should ensure an adequate supply of Urea. TCP should get a wake up call now, and not rely, on the last minute to rush to import urea. The TCP needs to be streamlined for better services and the corrupt element be identified and dumped.
