The weak monsoon current is temporarily cut off, reducing the water inflows in the four healthy rivers by 50 percent, ringing alarming bells for manager of the precious water resources of the water deficit country. Meteorological department said here on Sunday that hot and dry weather is likely to prevail over the most parts of the country.
Monsoon trough present along the foot hill of Himalayas has become less active. However thundershowers at a few places in Kashmir & Northern Area, and Punjab can be expected. The department has already warned that there might be 30 percent less monsoon rains this season by environment changes in this region. According to reports of WAPDA and Flood Warning Centre Lahore, the water inflows at all the rim stations have dropped to 2,50,000 cusecs that were more than 5,30,000 cusecs just a week ago.
The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has expressed its concern over this sudden drop of inflows in all the rivers at a time when it was much needed for maturing the cash crops like cotton, rice, sugar, maize, vegetables and fodder for livestock. In a communication to the provincial irrigation departments IRSA Chairman has asked them to put up their minimum indent for next fortnight for irrigating the standing crops. IRSA has already started releasing more water from Tarbela dam than the inflow.
