The prices of consumer items in the federal capital higher than the government specified rate in the weekly and general bazaars on the first day of the holy month of Ramazan.
The general observation as well as the interviews of a number of buyers in the bazaars revealed that the consumer items were sold in the weekly bazaars at high rates by taking advantage of the high demand in the month of Ramazan.
The consumers items mainly were sold at inflationary rates include sugar, atta, ghee, onion, potatoes, pulses, rice and different kinds of fruits. Despite government announcement, the utility stores did not sale sugar without National Identity Card.
Besides, due to short supply and lack of workers at the utility stores, buyers had to stand in the long queues for hours for getting 1-kg sugar and atta at subsidised rate.
On the other hand, CDA claimed that government ensured in provision of consumers items at reasonable rates. According to statement issued by CDA here said that on the first day of the holy month of Ramazan, the citizens thronged the weekly Bazaar being arranged by the CDA. The perishable items and commodities of daily use were available in these weekly bazaars at subsidised rates which is 5 to 15 percent less than the markets of Islamabad, it claimed.
The statement further stated that keeping in view the directions of the Chairman CDA, the Director or General, Civic Management, CDA, Mustafan Kazmi carried out a surprise visit of the weekly Bazaars in order to ensure provision of quality use items at fixed prices. Licenses of 8 stalls were suspended and those of 3 stalls were terminated on overcharging and quality standard violation, it added.
The CDA successfully negotiated with the whole sellers and local growers to ensure provision of quality daily use items at subsidised rates, it said and added that CDA chairman has directed the concerned authorities to regularly monitor the weekly bazaars and ensure that there is no shortage of daily use items especially during the Holy Month of Ramazan.
