Iran on Sunday condemned Argentina for linking Iran's designated defence minister to a massive bomb attack in Buenos Aires 15 years ago, IRNA news agency reported."The Argentine stance is blatant interference in Iran's internal affairs and we harshly condemn this illegal move," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi told IRNA.
The nomination of Ahmad Vahidi to head the Iranian Defence Ministry spurred protests in Argentina, where Justice officials have accused him of having taken part in the 1994 bombing of the Jewish mutual association AMIA, which left 85 dead.
"Since 1994 the Argentinean judiciary could not find one single piece of evidence against Iranian diplomats and military officials. Everything so far presented are baseless claims," the spokesman said.
"We therefore recommend that instead of making this hostile propaganda, Argentina should identify the real elements behind this terrorist act," Ghashghavi added.
The spokesman further charged the Argentinean judiciary to be under pressure of the "Zionist" (Israeli) lobby. The appointment of Vahidi has to be approved by the parliament early next month but as he was deputy defence minister for the last four years, his endorsement is considered to be certain.
A member of the parliament's foreign policy commission said protests against Vahidi would increase the number of confidence votes. "The Zionists (Israel) want to avail themselves of this case for their own advantage but their plot will fail and just lead to more confidence votes by the parliament for Vahidi," Javad Karimi- Ghodoussi told IRNA.
